Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Portugal Taxes FAQ. Here you’ll find answers to the most common questions for expats and foreign residents about filing taxes in Portugal, including IRS deadlines, NHR and IFICI regimes, required documents, and business accounting services. Whether you’re a first-time filer or an experienced expat, this guide helps you understand your obligations and stay fully compliant.

1. How do I file taxes as an expat in Portugal?

Expats must file annually. Portugal Taxes helps you prepare and submit accurate returns on time, in English and fully compliant with Portuguese law.

2. What is the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) regime?

The NHR regime was a special tax program for new residents, offering reduced taxes on certain income for 10 years. The original NHR closed to new applicants in March 2025 and has been replaced by the IFICI regime (NHR 2.0) for those becoming residents from 2024 onwards.

3. What is the IFICI regime (NHR 2.0)?

IFICI — the Tax Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation — is Portugal’s replacement for the NHR regime, effective from 1 January 2024. It offers a 20% flat tax rate on qualifying Portuguese employment or self-employment income, plus exemption on most foreign-sourced income, for up to 10 years. Unlike the original NHR, IFICI targets highly qualified professionals in sectors such as technology, research, manufacturing, higher education, and startups. Eligibility is narrower and requires formal registration with the Portuguese tax authorities. Not sure if you qualify? We assess your profile and help you apply.

4. When are the Portuguese IRS deadlines in 2026 for 2025 taxes?

The tax filing window runs from 1 April to 30 June 2026, with a single unified deadline for all taxpayers. If tax credits need to be applied, the deadline may be extended to 31 December 2026. Portugal Taxes guides you through all submissions to avoid penalties.

5. Can you help U.S. citizens file taxes in both countries?

Yes. Our 2-in-1 solution ensures compliance with both U.S. IRS and Portuguese tax authorities.

6. Do you offer accounting services for businesses?

Absolutely. We handle bookkeeping, reporting, and compliance for small businesses and expat-owned companies.

7. What documents do I need to file my taxes in Portugal?

Generally, you need proof of income, residency, and any relevant foreign tax statements. Portugal Taxes provides a clear checklist and guidance to make the process simple.

8. Who qualifies as a tax resident in Portugal?

You are considered a tax resident if you live in Portugal for more than 183 days per year or have a permanent home there. We help determine your residency status and obligations.

9. Are there penalties for late filing or missing documents?

Yes. Late filings or incomplete submissions can lead to fines and interest. Portugal Taxes ensures you meet deadlines and have all necessary documentation to avoid penalties.
